Lancashire Hundreds
Lanacashire used the term Hundred to define an anicent area of administration. This probably comes from the area having to supply 100 armed knights to serve the monarch. Lancashire was divided into six Hundreds for taxation purposes until the 19th century, these being:-
Amounderness - to the North of Preston and to the South of Lancaster.
Blackburn - to the east of Preston and to the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Leyland - to the south of Preston and to Standish.
Lonsdale was divided into two areas:-
- Lonsdale (North) - this area consisted of Barrow-in-Furness, Cartmel.
- Lonsdale (South) - this area consisted of Lancaster, North Lancashire.
Salford - this is roughly the Greater Manchester area.
West Derby - this consists of all of west Lancashire to the Mersey.
These six Hundreds where divided into the following townships:-
